In Fokus: Cunntdesgarcons
Ja’de aka Cunntdesgarcons currently lives in Boone, North Carolina - but will always claim Queens, New York as the place where they are from - and not surprised as the NYC - NC music pipeline is abundant with innovators, doers, and a sound all its own. We discovered Cunntdesgarcons’ sets through our friends at Somersault Records 4 months ago, and super amazed by their work in elevating Boone Area Community Radio. It’s given this one-to-watch DJ ample opportunity to showcase their own personal love for dj-ing, techno, and queer roots. Dj-ing as a whole has given Cunntdesgarcons the chance to express and explore their own identity in amazing ways from teaching people about the QPOC roots of techno to going out clubbing and not being scared to present fem.
Where in the world is Cunntdesgarcons? : Currently I'm in Boone,North Carolina but any chance I get during school breaks I always go back to NY (Jamaica, Queens specifically where I am from.)
What’s the inspiration behind this set? Where was your headspace here? : I recorded this mix while I had the flu so i was bedridden most of the time so this mix encapsulates my want to get up. Dance, go on a run, walk around outside, bike, just get up and do something.
so what made you want to start DJ-ing?: It started after coming back from Germany in 2016 and having pretty much listened to electronic music the whole time being there, discovering djing, and in recent years becoming more in tune with my gender, finding out the historical QPOC roots of both electronic music and Djing.
Tell us about the concepts behind your tracks/music projects or something that’s inspiring you to work on your own music frequencies. : Schools been kicking my ass so it's been rough working on my own tracks but i've been enjoying finding out about new labels, tracks, and artist
Where do you see the future of DJing? And where do you want it to take you into the future? The metaverse? Streams? Etc.?
Hmmm it's weird because after Covid-19, so many new ideas popped out with streams, discord parties, VR, etc so I don't even know where it could go from here. I'm hoping though it will take me back home to NY in the end.
Describe a moment / club night / party / that made you want to become a DJ/Producer or devote yourself to music. : I can't think of a distinct moment but most recently this summer I spent it back up in NY, and just all the people I met, conversations I had, it made me feel both comfortable and truly at home and it pushes me to want to return and DJ there.
Favorite tracks at the moment - or of all time?
-Most recent favorite track: Withdrawal(Aura Mix): KAVARI
-All time favorite(one of): GHOST IN THE SHELL ARISE : Cornelius
Favorite DJ and/or producers capturing your heart RIGHT NOW? This is kind of a weird answer but it would be the composer Yoko Kanno who has composed several soundtracks for Ghost in the Shell. It would either be her or any of the DJs on the local community radio here in boone @BooneAreaCommunityRadio (Shoutout E&T love yall)
What is the genre/scene/city/artist that you feel is underrated and needs more hype/awareness? Chapel Hill, i wouldnt say its underrated but wow shoutout all the amazing DJs coming from WXYC, one of them just performed at the Paragon. So many events taking place by other young adults who share the same love for DJ and electronic music.

If you had any superpowers it would be:
Most likely, to fly - the power of flight so I can save on airfare and travel cost.
Your fullest expression of love is:
Talking to other people about stuff we both enjoy but isn’t as popular. I LOVE talking to people here about niche fashion, dj-ing, and electronic music cause its not really big here so having that pure conversation just feels so good.
What is the best piece of advice you could give to a DJ / Producer just starting out?
No matter if you're in NY or some random town in the midwest, if you enjoy it, keep doing it because the opportunities will most likely present themselves to you if you stay to yourself.
